A brand new style of hotel has opened its doors in London, using the low cost business model often seen on airlines. The Tune hotel is the first the company has launched in the UK, and is conveniently located in Westminster, London. Prices are extremely cheap for the location with a standard rate of just £35 per night – this can reach as little as £9 per night on promotions.

However, the low cost rooms do have reasoning behind them. The Tune hotel is based on a “no-frills” style format, so any optional extras you will need to budget as an additional cost. To name just a few examples, you will need to pay if you wish to use the room’s television, towels, hairdryer or internet.

Previously, Tune hotels could be seen in Malaysia amongst other places. It is thought that the Westminster hotel is already busy with bookings scheduled in from September onwards – this is a positive sign for the company which has rapid expansion plans to open further hotels in London, the UK and worldwide.

Later this year Kate Moss and Topshop will end their three year fashion design partnership. The autumn and winter clothing range expected to launch in October will be the model’s 14th and final design collection which has been created for the online and high street retailer.

Many items designed by Ms Moss proved popular with Topshop customers, and it is thought that she has made at least £3m in total from the ranges. Sir Philip Green quoted that the model has “other commitments”, so it is likely that there is simply not the time for her to continue designing alongside other projects.

At the unveiling of her first ever designs, thousands of people queued outside Topshop’s flagship store on Oxford Street ready to make purchases – the event was even dubbed by newspapers as “Moss mania”. Topshop was quick in starting a trend of celebrity deals, with high street chain H&M following suit by hiring people such as Stella McCartney and Madonna to design ranges for them.

Walmart owned supermarket chain Asda has reported a fall in second quarter sales as shoppers begin to feel the pinch of the economy. According to research conducted by Kantar Worldpanel, Asda’s market share has dropped in the 12 weeks ending July 11. Asda’s chief executive, Andy Clarke, said that “These are increasingly uncertain times for millions of families across the UK.”

Currently, UK families are facing the lowest level of disposable income in the final quarter for two years. With a lower amount of disposable income, it is likely that fewer impulse purchases are being made on the large range of goods which the supermarket stocks. Although sales for Asda are down, the figures were released as the US based owner Walmart announced a 3.6% growth in profit.

For many people Christmas is a time of the year which always comes round extremely quickly. Selfridge’s, a large department store based in London’s Oxford Street, certainly agrees with this as they have opened their Christmas shop six days earlier than last year due to increasing demand from tourists wanting festive souvenirs.

When visiting the store you are likely to see a seasonal display of products including baubles, ornaments, trees and tinsel. Naturally, this leaves some shoppers bemused however it is all done for the convenience of customers. Sales figures have not been released, however it is likely to be a positive move for the store which stocks 25,000 different lines of Christmas products.

Selfridge’s is not the only store getting ready for sales. The Christmas shop for Harrod’s also opens in August and Hamley’s toy store has already released the list of items expected to be in demand this year. One of the main reasons these large stores promote Christmas products from August is due to the large amount of overseas visitors coming to visit within the summer months.

National high street and online retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) have recently been seen to sell school uniforms suitable for obese children. Amongst the new range, within stores you will be able to purchase everything from blazers for plus-size three year olds to size 18 uniforms for girls.

M&S is just one retailer who has recognised the niche demand to offer plus-size schoolwear to shoppers; other large retail chains offering similar items include Next and BHS. The M&S range has been launched as part of a trial prompted by increased demand from parents.

Campaigners have commented that retailers offering plus-size clothing is commercial recognition that obesity in school children is increasing. According to the National Obesity Forum, 27% of entrants to primary schools are now considered as overweight or obese.

Parenting forums have widely debated the new offering by M&S, with many welcoming the range on the basis that all children have the same right to correct fitment clothing. As M&S is a leading retailer for schoolwear, it is thought they want to make sure that their range is accessible to children of all shapes, sizes and ages.

Online shopping giant Amazon has recently announced that it is now selling more digital books for the Kindle e-reader than the equivalent hardback ones. Previously, the company had never shared with the public how many Kindle devices or e-books it had sold to customers.

Since the price has been lowered, the growth rate of the e-book readers’ sales has tripled. Although this announcement has been made that substantially more e-books are being sold, figures of exactly how many have been purchased is still unknown.

During the past three months, Amazon says it has sold 143 Kindle e-books for every 100 hardback books. Within the past month (following the price drop of the Kindle device) this number has increased to 180 e-books for every 100 hardback books sold. These figures do not include paperback books, which are likely to still have a greater sales volume than both hardback and e-books by a wide gap.

For 15 years Amazon has been selling hardback books; the Kindle e-book device on the other hand has not even been around for three years. Remarkably there are five individual authors who have each sold over 500,000 e-books through the website, including Charlaine Harris, Steig Larsson, Stephenie Meyer, James Patterson and Nora Roberts.

When you next purchase clothes from an Asda supermarket, you may find a hidden message within pockets of the items regarding pay for factory workers. Campaigners for the charity ActionAid have allegedly been placing these secret messages into items of clothing at stores right across the country.

Many large UK cities have been targeted including Birmingham, Edinburgh, London and Manchester. However, it is likely that the marketing will continue until Asda agrees to make changes.

Asda denies accusations that foreign factory workers are in need of higher pay, and claims it has taken measures in places such as Bangladesh which should lead to staff working less hours in better conditions and getting paid more. According to research conducted by the charity, it is proposed that paying workers better would only cost Asda an additional 2p on a typical T-shirt costing £4.

If you find one of the secret messages, the charity has said you will be able to receive a free ActionAid T-shirt and entry into a prize draw to win items such as Fair Trade clothing and food. As part of the campaign shoppers will also be able to send a message to bosses of Asda, which is owned by Walmart, to demand an improvement to workers’ pay.

If you are mystery shopping in the supermarket Tesco any time soon, you may spot a limited edition lasagna sandwich and consider it as a poor man’s food for rough times. The reasons behind this unhealthy innovation from Tesco are still uncertain, but one may think the giant supermarket chain was throwing away too much lasagna left on the shelves. An extremely innovate way of recycling if this is the case however.

Even though some people say it brings back memories of their student life, those could not have all been good memories; it allegedly contains a large amount of fat and carbohydrates. Something the UK doesn’t necessarily need right now is a product which will assist people in gaining weight after just a few bits.

Whilst many supermarkets are promoting healthier food, such as vegetables, fruit and fish, it is surprising to see an already unhealthy lasagna snack placed between slices of bread for even more carbs. There appears to be few healthy ingredients in it except for the tomato puree and calcium in the cheese.

Student food is a notion you normally correlate with necessity, lack of money and lack of a better alternative. It’s quite bizarre for Tesco to imagine that once in the store, the first thing a customer will go for is something like a lasagna sandwich. However, this particular sandwich hasn’t been created to eat every day and students are known for liking to try something new.

According to research, around 32% of British holidaymakers will pay for their trips using either a credit card, travel agent payment plan or through borrowing money from family and friends.

The survey shows that the average person borrows slightly over £1,200 to cover costs associated with their trip. Staggeringly, 58% of those surveyed admitted that they could not afford to begin repaying debts straight away.

The research was conducted by insurer Bright Grey, who also found that 13% of people absolutely must have a holiday every year whether they could afford it or not. The same percentage also stated that they needed to be seen by friends to take a trip away at least once a year.

Although holidays both abroad and locally may seem tempting, it is recommend that you should take one only when you can afford it. With Britain’s economy still suffering from the recession, nobody knows what the future will hold just yet.

The future may well be an exciting time for mystery shoppers, with predictions that shop environments will be altered to make full use of all human senses. According to one media firm, shoppers will listen not only to carefully selected background music but also be able to smell a signature scent which they can relate to a brand.

With thoughts on there possibly being a double-dip recession, can retailers really afford to make these changes? Analysts think so, as it will all assist in boosting sales and ultimately increasing growth for businesses.

Stores have experienced media since the early 1930s, however the majority of efforts have been placed on traditional methods such as background music and strategically placed advertisements. With the availability of new technology, a large amount of new opportunities are available for any business to really stand out from the crowd.

One example is the Timberland shop in London’s Westfield. Within the shop is a special signature scent which aims to invigorate customers, making them want to grab a pair of boots and sprint up a mountain.
